Location: Clapham Depot, South West London
Value: £100,000
Environment: Live Rail Depot
Completion: March 2024
Role: Sub-Contractor
In early 2024, Econ Group was appointed to deliver the safe dismantling of two 35-metre-high steel lattice lighting towers at the operational Clapham rail depot. As a rail competent contractor, we were selected for our ability to execute complex demolition activities in high-risk, live railway environments with minimal disruption.
After isolating the area, our trained operatives accessed the platform using harnesses and internal ladders. Precision-cut holes were made in each tower leg to thread lifting chains. Once rigged, the tower was lifted in one piece by a 200-tonne crane and moved to the depot access road. There, the structure was segmented by flame cutters and loaded safely by a 13-tonne excavator into a 40-yard skip.
A similar approach was taken, using a 500-tonne crane to lift the second tower. Sequential leg cutting ensured a stable lift and controlled descent. The structure was laid down using a chain-assisted excavator under a banksman’s direction. Once grounded, the tower was cut and segregated for efficient removal.
All works were carried out during a 12-hour rail possession window (07:00–19:00). The live rail environment demanded strict adherence to COSS-led protocols, especially concerning overhead lines and restricted zones. HIAB operators were briefed to retract booms during depot transit to prevent service disruption.
While no notifiable asbestos was identified, Econ operatives were fully briefed and trained in asbestos awareness, prepared for any unexpected material exposures during dismantling.
The Clapham dismantling project was completed on time, on budget, and without safety incidents. By self-delivering both lifting and cutting operations, Econ Group ensured rapid sequencing and responsive adjustments in a tightly controlled rail depot environment.
As a trusted rail competent contractor, Econ Group brings together experience in dismantling, asbestos awareness, and safe delivery near live infrastructure. Our ability to mobilise trained operatives, manage complex lifts, and coordinate with multiple stakeholders makes us the partner of choice for critical enabling works across the UK rail network.
